What is hemp and how does this wonder crop grow?

Both hemp and marijuana come from the same plant cannabis. Sativa cannabis is one of the oldest domesticated crops in the world. Evidence shows that it was first cultivated in East Asia back in 8000 BC over time. It spread throughout Europe France Spain and eventually made its way to the Americas.

Hemp, a versatile plant, can reach heights of six to twelve feet and matures within a mere three to four months before harvest. Its growth cycle demands significantly less water, pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizer compared to other crops.

Hemp plants must be tested to ensure they're below the 0.3% threshold of THC and that was the super brief history lesson of hemp.

What hemp can be used for?

Hemp is versatile and can be used to produce raw materials for textiles paper, clothing biodegradable plastics, building materials, bedding and nutritional foods. While 100% hemp fibers typically possess a rough texture, they can be blended with cotton or silk to achieve a softer finish. Hemp clothing is known for its lightweight nature and high absorbency. Moreover, it exhibits remarkable strength and functions as a filter for UV light, aiding in skin protection. Additionally, the hemp fiber demonstrates resistance to both mold and bacteria growth.

The difference between hemp and marijuana

The terms "hemp" and "marijuana" are commonly utilized to distinguish different varieties of cannabis. However, the reality is that neither hemp nor marijuana represents a specific strain or species within the cannabis plant. Instead, these terms serve to categorize the diverse spectrum of cannabis varieties into two distinct classifications.

1) The biggest difference is the amount of THC

Cannabis finds application in numerous industries beyond recreational drug use. The government permits various sectors to cultivate a non-psychoactive form of cannabis, commonly referred to as hemp. For the term "health" to be associated with hemp, the THC levels must remain below a specific threshold to guarantee that consuming or inhaling cannabis does not induce a high. In the United States, the established threshold stands at 0.3% THC, a minimal amount that has a negligible impact on the body. This threshold marks the most significant distinction between cannabis variants.

2) Another difference is that marijuana is limited to recreational and medical uses.

Although hemp has no recreational value, it has a long history of uses including being an ingredient material in medicines paper such as the Declaration of Independence in the US Constitution. Biodegradable plastics, clothing carpets, insulation concrete, alternatives paint, salad dressing beer, flour, non-dairy milk, bedding, ethanol fuel and more PEM has been used in many of these ways for over 2,000 years and many of these hemp-based products are superior to their modern counterparts in terms of durability and sustainability.
