Linen vs Hemp

Linen and hemp are often spoken about together. Both are plant fibres. Both breathe well. Both soften with use and carry a natural texture that feels more alive than perfectly smooth fabric.

The difference is less about which fibre is better, and more about what kind of feeling you want from the piece.

The feel of linen

Linen is made from flax. It is known for its dry, airy hand and its relaxed drape. Fresh linen can feel crisp, then gradually becomes softer and more fluid with washing.

It wrinkles easily, but that is also part of its appeal. Linen often looks best when it is allowed to move naturally, with creases that make the garment feel lived in rather than overly pressed.

The feel of hemp

Hemp has a similar honesty, but it usually feels a little more grounded. The fibre is strong, breathable and durable, with a texture that can feel slightly more substantial at first.

Over time, hemp softens beautifully. It keeps its practical strength while becoming more comfortable against the skin, which makes it well suited to everyday clothing and home textiles.

How they wear over time

Both linen and hemp become more personal with use. They are not fabrics that stay exactly the same from the first wear to the fiftieth.

Linen tends to become softer and more relaxed. Hemp also softens, but often keeps a little more structure. That balance between ease and strength is one reason we return to hemp again and again.

Choosing between them

If you want something light, airy and immediately relaxed, linen is a beautiful choice.

If you want a fabric that is breathable, durable and designed to soften slowly with everyday life, hemp may feel more natural.

There is no need to treat them as opposites. Both belong to the same quiet family of natural fibres: honest, textured and made to be used.
